Homosassa - The Best of Florida Fishing Inshore

Florida is replete with legendary inshore fishing destinations. From the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, Florida is loaded with coastal rivers, creeks, canals, inlets, reefs, waterways, bays, keys and flats. A few places sit a notch or two above the rest, for a reason. These are places with fisheries that have historically produced outstanding fishing. They are also places that have grown and matured over decades. While much of Florida's waterways south of Orlando choke on runoff from commercial development and chemical spraying to fight invasive plants, places just to the north continue to thrive, untouched by polluted water. On the Gulf coast, sits Homosassa. This is Old Florida, to this day. You can feel it. Fishermen have been traveling here for over a 100 years in search of angling nirvana. Despite the significance of the contribution that Homosassa has made to the history of Florida fishing, it still remains a hidden gem, of sorts.

While Homosassa has morphed over the past century, it has held its ground as an inshore fishing hotbed. Species like grouper, mangrove snapper, sheepshead, flounder, sea bass and triple tail abound. You have a legit shot at giant tarpon when they push through. The lynch pin to the whole fishery is the golden triangle of red drum, snook and sea trout. Having the big three inshore species at your avail throughout the year sets Homosassa well apart.

The unique quality the helps shape the coastal waters is the first magnitude freshwater spring that feeds the Homosassa River. The warm clean waters feed nutrients into the Gulf and provides shelter for cold tolerant gamefish year round. The warmth of the river has aloud the snook fishery to grow into one of the most robust and diverse in the state. There is so much life in the backcountry and on the keys that litter the coastal seascape. You could get lost fishing for days and never stop catching. A little local knowledge never hurts.

When you take a look at the history of people that have played a roll in the development of Homosassa fishing, there is a name that continues to jumps out. Toney. The Toney family has been in Homosassa for generations. They know the land and the water. The fishing knowledge that has been passed down generation after generation is rich and is very much alive today. These fishermen know every stretch, pass, canal, river, creek and key. Never have I meet a better caliber of people. Honest, humble, strong, hard working and well respected in the community. The Toney's are consummate watermen and conservationists. Getting to spend time on the water and learn how they fish is an absolute treat.

When it comes to the group of guides that define the Florida inshore fishing experience, you would be remiss to not include the Toney name. Capt. William Toney is without a doubt one of the very best. He is both river rat and osprey. He knows the waters. His instincts are razor sharp. You could take him anywhere, put a fishing rod in his hand and he is going to catch fish. Highly skilled and dialed all the way in on what is happening in the Homosassa fishery everyday of the year, William is well versed in the laws, biology, water conditions and what's driving the bite. If it is at play in the fishery, he knows about it and can articulate the finer points.

It is a distinct honor to call Capt. William Toney my friend. We have been fishing together, talking and sharing our life experiences for several years. There are very few people I enjoy fishing with as much as William. I consider myself lucky to be able to go and experience first hand the ease with which he shares what he is doing on the water and why. He has so much to share. He and I have fished for redfish, sea trout, snook, snapper, black drum, triple tail, mackerel, sea bass, grouper, grunts, sheepshead, bluegill, bass and continue to push to outer limitations of what the fishery can produce.

With an advanced degree in the outdoors and generations of Homosassa fishing know how encoded into his DNA, the inshore Florida fishing knowledge he possesses is second to no other fisherman. Captain William Toney is a great friend and a valuable part of what I like to do. Share fishing knowledge. If we can help others grow as fishermen, we have fulfilled out duty as champions of this great endeavor we call fishing. It is only through the acquisition of knowledge that we grow. Having the opportunity to learn from the very best is the ultimate reward for our investment in the sport. If you are able, take the opportunity and fish with William. You will be hooked for life. If you cannot get out with him, watch his many videos. His collection of instructional videos share his methods for catching all the big inshore fishing species found along the northern Gulf coast. Fish with the best, get the best knowledge and catch more fish.

Fishing the Fall Transition for Trophy Fish

seth horne catfishing flahead scott manning in the spread fishing video

For you fishermen that love freshwater fishing, this is a great time of year. When the weather starts to change and you begin to feel fall in the air, you have a good chance to land huge fish. Why is this. As the air temperature drops, the water starts cooling, also. This sets off a change in the feeding habits of fish. This is especially true for big fish.

With stable water conditions, big predatory fish settle in to a regular feeding pattern. They feed as needed and exert as little energy as possible to snag a meal. With cooling water temps, trophy fish put the feed bag on. This is entirely primordial and biological. The bait fish will move to shallower waters in search of sun warmed waters. This movement of bait fish may signal to the bigger fish that they better get what they can in a short period of time before there is no food left. With the feed bag on, a great opportunity exists to hook up with a beast.

When you think about freshwater apex predators, you have to consider musky, catfish and trout. Big brown trout, flathead catfish and musky will slam anything in their domain, as they gorge themselves. All of these fish hold down spots as voracious feeders and species that are not always easy to catch, when fishing for trophy fish.

I recently spent a day on the water with Capt. Scott Manning in Tennessee fishing for and discussing how to fish for flathead catfish during this transition. We were not discussing generalities, our conversation centered on trophy fish. The fall transition is one of the best times to catch a giant catfish. If you want to know more about what we discussed and see how Scott approaches this type of fishing, watch our newest fishing video on In The Spread.

Learn From The Best | A Full Throttle Media Mantra

seth horne full throttle media

No matter your interest or your endeavor, if you want to learn more about it, the best course of action is to find someone who is highly proficient in that field and learn as much as you can from them. It may not always be possible to have a personal relationship with the person you want to learn from, but there are a variety of sources that offer online learning through a video format that offer first person opportunities to learn. At Full Throttle Media we strive to produce instructional content that features some of the very best practitioners in their profession.

When I say learn from the best, I am not positioning the folks we work as the absolute best, but rather among the very best. Nobody is the single best, even though they may think they are. What I find with  guys I work with that I consider to among the best is their self deprecating attitudes. They, themselves, are on a quest to constantly get better. They also are not shy to give praise to those that came before them. Being humble and open to giving back to help others achieve greatness is a common characteristic among the great minds that I have the pleasure to surround myself with.

I encourage you to help others that are looking for a way to improve their station. Be open to approach. It only takes a few minutes out of your busy schedule to have a huge impact on someone else's life. I have been blessed to be able to work with some amazing people that uplift me and challenge my thinking. It is by engaging in intellectual friction that we are able to grow our minds.

Big Muskie Fishing | How to Catch Muskie | Cory Allen

People do not usually think about the south when muskie fishing is the topic. It all happens up north in Canada or Minnesota or one of the other fantastic fishing states up there. The shock! The horror of finding out some of the biggest muskie swim down yonder leaves many an angler mystified. No. Please. It is not possible that there are perhaps bigger fish roaming the waters of Tennessee than anywhere else in the country.

What a lot of people do not realize is that the early part of the twentieth century saw the Federal Government damming up rivers to create electricity to feed the landscape. A rather unique byproduct came along with those dams. Reservoirs and impoundments happened. Huh? Yes. Land that was once fertile forests and fields was suddenly underwater. Think about what the landscape looked like before the dams. Undulating hills rolling across the land, tall tree stands, creeks and streams, plateaus and more. Well, this is now all gone. All you see is water. Ah hah! But, it is not  gone. It has created a habitat that supports loads of fish and big fish.

Talk about a dynamic situation. All these characteristics are now below the surface and there is current. The water levels rise and fall based upon release schedules. This current in turn pushes bait and nutrients. Reservoirs and impoundments have created some of the best fishing in the country. Let's take Tennessee. They have trophy bass, crappie, panfish, catfish, trout, muskie and other strange fish. If you are a trophy hunter, this is where you will need to go, at some point.

When you do decide to visit Tennessee and fish for the freshwater apex predator, there is one guy to consider. A controversial figure. Feared by many. His skill and vast knowledge intimidate many other folks. For not, I say. Cory Allen is one of the nicest guys you will fish with. Self deprecating in a serious way, at times, Cory is one of the smartest fishermen that I have ever meet and certainly had the privilege to fish with. A day on the water with the "Tennessee Valley Muskie Authority" is like a phd course in muskie fishing.

Even though Cory is from Illinois, he has spent the better part of his adult life in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. These are the hills that hold giant fish. This is also where you find the Tennessee Valley Authority or TVA busy at work controlling the flow of the Tennessee River. This is also where some of the absolute best reservoir and impoundment fishing can be found, in the United States. That's right. I said it. This state just has ridiculous fishing, across the board.

When it comes to big muskie, Cory Allen has a keen understanding what the fish are doing anytime of the year and where they hold. These aren't the "normal spots", but rather, at times, obscure areas where you would not think to fish. The rich fabric of the underwater topography serves many obstacles and some really awesome structure. There are wide ranging channel flats, deep channels, bays, creek mouths, rivers, creeks, shallow backwater, ledges, bowls, discharge ponds, lakes, hidden timber, stump fields, fishing grounds that are ever unfolding. Cory knows this system with scary detail. He doesn't just fish a lot. He is constantly analyzing what is changing, what is remaining the same and how that will impact what the muskies do.

Cory puts more 50 inch, "fiddies" fish in his boat each year than any other guide in Tennessee. You want huge fish, this is who you fish with. Like him or not, you cannot knock the results that stack up year after year. Aside from all the big ass fish Cory Allen catches, there are loads more healthy medium class fish.

Probably one of the best aspects of Cory's prowess is his command of lure manipulation. Cory knows all the good, I mean really good, lure craftsman making musky lures. He tests lures to no end. No matter the situation, Cory has the lure that will trigger fish. If you want to know how to get more out of your presentations, this is the guy to learn from. You can watch his collection of muskie fishing instructional videos on In The Spread here https://inthespread.com/freshwater/muskie

Don't get me wrong. It is not like he catches big muskie or any muskie everyday. It is not that easy. But, I can say this. Every time I have fished with him, I have caught fish. That is pretty good. Knock, knock.

Winter Sea Trout Fishing Video - In The Spread

Fishing Knowledge = Success

Spotted sea trout or speckled trout are a species that you can target year round in Florida. One of the more challenging times of year will be in the winter when cold Gulf of Mexico waters can push the fish off the keys and limestone rocks out to deeper water. The key is to fish areas that are exposed to the sun on outgoing or low tides. These areas absorb warmth from the sun. When the tides turns and pushes water in covering these areas, speckled trout will school up to take advantage of the warmth and feed on food being pushed with the incoming water. Understanding this goes a long way to narrowing down where to start fishing.

Muskie Spinner Baits with Trailer Hooks by Cory Allen

The devil’s in the deets.

A couple muskies 44 and 50” respectively that have come into my boat during the past couple weeks that without trailer hooks and selectively chosen trailers for each would probably have never happened.

Ironically a bag of fish mixed between those marks and two beyond also avoided capture because of slight errors in how to choose and present proper trailers for each situation and presentation.

Big muskies, especially fish over the 48-50” mark, are notorious for “nipping” at nearly every presentation that exists during periods of relative inactivity, which as they become older and reach what musky anglers consider to be trophy sizes, becomes the bulk of their time.

Especially in systems where smaller fish saturate the same structure situations, or the number of ancillary predators present increases, the more subtle a touch it takes at times to circumvent fishing through smaller fish and target larger specimens specifically.

In one of our upcoming instructional videos, I spend considerable time discussing this and the use of specific spinnerbaits for these neutral/negative open water fish.

In fact, you get to see me even lose one of the larger fish I’ve hooked this season at the boat due to my own error in not implementing a proper trailer hook with a suitably chosen trailer that best complements the way the specific spinnerbait is being used (ex. Burning over weeds, slow rolled up a deep break dragging bottom, yo-yo’d, vertically jigged...) and the tendencies of each specific weight and blade combination as well.

Notice there wasn’t even a single mention of color.

But ironically, this is one of the few times I will pay attention to color, as far as blade color set to trailer with different water hues and tints, and I discuss that a length as well.

If you haven’t checked out the quickly expanding and diverse fresh and saltwater libraries of educational angling media In the Spread has to offer... ...it’s about to be a great time to do so. www.inthepread.com

Stay tuned for our new HQ site, both in standard and mobile format, coming VERY soon.

Largemouth Bass Fishing in Central Florida

in the spread topwater largemouth bass fishing nick kefalides florida

The largemouth bass fishing in Central Florida is remarkable. There are so many lakes that support habits conducive to the growth of giant bass. This is truly big bass country. Knowing when and where to fish throughout the year can be a challenge. Most of the well known bass lakes are not super easy to fish, but if you spend enough time on the water or know someone who spends ample amounts of time on the water, then you are way ahead of the game.

Last week, we ventured to a remote lake south of Orlando with bass fishing pro Nick Kefalides to target largemouth bass on topwater.  As he says, "this is not for the faint of heart". Surface detonations can startled you, as big bass explode on lures. Nick is an ex-marine special operator, so he brings a unique discipline to his fishing. He is very focused, patient and ready for any eventuality. He passion is topwater fishing and it shows.

Nick and I put together a 2 hour program on how to target largemouth bass on topwater that shares incredible depth of information on how to break down a shallow water lake. We drill into lures and presentation, casting and retrieval methodology, boat positioning, how to stay weedless, identifying fish behavioral patterns and more. Nick provides a stream of consciousness about what is happening and how he is responding while catching healthy bass and healthy bass. You can check out this amazing video at http://www.inthespread.com

New Muskie Fishing Videos in Editing

in the spread muskie fishing musky trolling cory allen videos

Cory Allen and Seth Horne had a very successful day and a half filming for In The Spread and covered at least 7-8 different topics from approaching open water to advanced trolling concepts and a variety of lure presentations from utilizing select spinnerbaits for suspended fish casting (where we lost a low 50” on film at the boat) to highlighting unique traits of some gliders made by Tim Woodyard and twitch baits maximized by his customization. On top of landing a few nice fish up to 48”, caught trolling a Blue Water twitch bait on film and the fish in the featured picture here, you get to see me hook the giant using Joe Murphy’s specially designed safety pin spinners made to target less active suspended muskies on the third cast using it as such and Seth had another we missed the hookset on fishing down 14-18 ft over 22-35 ft. I hope you guys will enjoy these videos and they help you gain some confidence in a few areas as well as further enhance your ability to problem solve on the water no matter the situation you face.

Panfish Fishing Central Florida

panfish fishing in the spread william toney its freshwater bluegill florida

Late February proved to be the ideal time to target panfish in the wilderness of west central Florida with Capt. William Toney and In The Spread. The weather was ideal and the adventure outstanding. William does not target panfish on a regular basis, but he did a lot of this type of fishing in his younger years and knows where some real honey holes are to be found. These are springs, quarries and borrow pits that produced beautiful fish.

We filmed some really spectacular fishing and hiked through the some amazing backcountry. The sheer variety of breeds and colors on the panfish in this area is amazing. There are so many micro-environments to explore. We will have two videos out on fishing wilderness springs and quarries next week. Stay tuned and thanks for following.

Deciding Without Deciding

You know the saying, "if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." During a recent project I encountered a company handicapped by indecision at the highest level. I was originally approached to consult on the development of content for this company's online and PR objectives. Basically, what they wanted to do was reposition their brand after a year of failed advertising. And, they wanted this completed yesterday. Part of the strategy involved putting together a team of highly skilled web developers, photographers and film makers to create an innovative and dynamic branding platform. This is right up my alley. I'm thinking this is going to be a cake walk.

The most obvious short coming was that they had no imagery of any quality. In order to put out a head turning website and series of ads we needed a series of mind blowing images. No problem! So, I gathered my team and started to drive the process. Now, this company knew full well going into this project that they would need photography. They make the requisite down payment and off we go, right??? Well, we need to schedule the photo shoot. The request is made to approve the plan and relevant expenses. No answer is received. One week goes by, then two, then three and still no response to any of our emails. What the hell is going on? Well, as it turns out, every decision rests with the CEO who is, as I find out, incapable of making a decision without first hiring a consultant.

The consultant part is a joke, but you get the point. We are not talking about a huge amount of money for the photography component, so what gives? What happened to the sense of urgency? How and why do companies enter into this type of engagement without thinking through the process as it has been laid out. You want to know why? If you do not know what you are doing and you are taking advise from people that do not know what they are doing, you do not get very far before your weaknesses are exposed. The weakness here is that in a company this large, if there is not one manager, director, V.P., attorney and even the CFO that can authorize payments, nothing gets executed.

Wow, bureaucracy at it's finest. What happened you ask. I walked away, refunded the deposit and told the company that I would not allow my name to be associated with their half measures. The entire project hinged on having the right images. They made a choice to proceed with the amateurish photos they had on hand and again failed to execute on their goals. What's worse, not making a decision or making a decision by indecision?

Being a Producer

I was having an interesting meeting yesterday with the agency that is building the website for my project In the Spread. As I was walking out, Max Forstater, the Technical Director for Merge Atlanta, says, "it is great that you actually have a media company that produces media". We laughed. From there, we started taking about how tough it is to actually produce content that gets delivered to market.

What does it mean to be a producer in the visual media industry? According to creativeskillset.org, "Producers are highly self-motivated individuals, who have the final responsibility for all aspects of a film's production. There are so many ways of being a Producer. Very often the Producer is the first person to become involved in a project, even before the writer, or they may be the agent-style Producer who focuses on the deal. Generally though, the Producer shepherds the film from inception to completion and beyond, starting long before the film-making process and continuing to talk about and sell the picture long after everyone else has gone on to other projects."

That definition only scratches the surface of what the job entails. There is so much that goes into creating a project, arranging financing, bringing in all the principles, filming and editing the material, obtaining distribution, marketing and promoting the project. And that is keeping it simple. Talk about a grind...

I have had several people ask me about becoming a producer of films or videos. This always causes me to pause. I think of all the folks I know that went to film school and still aren't producing anything. The world of media production is a hard business to break into, especially if you want to produce your own projects. You do not want to go at it the way I did. That is a tough road to hoe. But, if your dream is to produce films or videos, go for it.

I began producing content with Full Throttle Media just over a decade ago without any formal training. But, I did come with a solid business background, which is hugely important. The one glowing benefit I had was the luxury of taking several years to learn cameras, audio equipment and lighting. I am still learning. And then of course, there is a strong creative/artistic streak that runs in my family, which helps. I also had the benefit, over this period, of being taught the business and legal side of production by a super talented film producer, while living in Santa Monica.

In brief, to all who seek to pursue a career in production, never stop feeding your edge. Find a mentor and suck their brain dry. Study, read, experiment and be prepared to make a lot of mistakes. Nothing teaches you more than screwing up. Just try not to do it on someone else's dime.

At the end of the day, I love what I do and am always willing to help anyway I am able.

Thanks for following,
Seth Horne

In the Spread Featured in Sun-Sentinel Article

Steve Waters from the Sun-Sentinel says, "the In the Spread with RJ Boyle DVD offers keys to daytime swordfishing success. He goes on the write, Boyle freely shares his tactics with anglers at seminars and at RJ Boyle Studio, his Lighthouse Point tackle store and art gallery.

Between his store, his artwork, his seminars, his fishing and time with his family, Boyle has a hectic schedule. So he decided to record everything he knows about swordfishing in the DVD "Daytime Swordfishing."
"Having a tackle store and doing seminars, we're constantly bombarded with so many questions because daytime swordfishing is very technical," said Boyle, who has done daytiming seminars from Texas to New York. "It's very difficult to teach numerous customers at numerous times of the day about daytime swordfishing. Making the DVD was something we really had to do."
Boyle and producer Seth Horne of Full Throttle Media did a great job with "Daytime Swordfishing."

To Be Creative

What does it take to be creative? It does not matter how much you study or how many books or articles you read. You do not become creative by watching others. You can, without a doubt, "copy" or draw inspiration from someone else. But, in order to be truly creative, you have to be able to distill your brilliant idea down to the point where you can bring life to it. That is the hard part.

Genuine creativity is an innate ability, I believe. Some have it and some do not. Even some of the folks in the creative industry are not all that imaginative. You know what I mean. How many ads, commercials or shows have you seen that just left you wondering how they ever got approval and more importantly funding? Take the time to get it right.

Good creative, I mean GOOD creative is out there. It may just require a little more effort to find and execute.

Being able to go from idea to execution is key. And, that is where most genius ideas fall short. The execution is, in many respects, the harder part to pull off. There are lots of creative folks out there. But, there are not nearly as many executors. Beyond that, a lot of the people that could execute given the opportunity are never given that opportunity. I know so many organizations that stubbornly stick with the same old same old for way too long. The sport fishing industry is a prime example. Please, stop the madness. We are tired of seeing the same thing repackaged year after year. Creative friction is good. Embrace it! Use a new team. Hold yourself and others to a higher standard.

With good friction comes an even better flow of creativity. Properly distill your thoughts. Really thinking through your concept will bring forth insights into what the end user or client wants and needs. Now you will have even better ideas about how to execute on your creative inspiration. The distillation process takes time. Sure, sometimes it can happen in a flash, but more times that not it takes a fair amount of time. Invest that time and everyone will be happier for it. The most important point is to find and work with really creative people that can deliver.

Well, that is the plan for next week. The power of the giant bluefin will test the sporting will of any angler. This majestic behemoth forced innovation on the sport fishing industry starting in the early twentieth century. Heavy tackle, fighting chairs and nimble sport fishing boats were what was needed to recon with these massive fish and still are today. This is not for the weak of heart.

Full Throttle Media producer Seth Horne along with RJ Boyle venture to the north atlantic to shoot the third segment of In the Spread. Their objective is to film a comprehensive instructional video on how to prepare for, catch and release one of sport fishing's greatest game fish. Legendary big game captains James "Chuy" Roberts and Andy Moyes join RJ and Seth in the spread on this epic adventure. Highlights and footage to follow soon. Stay tuned!

Full Throttle Media Advances With The "In the Spread" Instructional Series

As the cool fall weather creeps in pushing aside summer's humidity, I look back over the summer and realize my posts have been few. For good reason, I say. The Full Throttle Media team has been bearing  down in an all out effort to finish the first two videos for "In the Spread" featuring RJ Boyle. It may have taken us a tad longer that expected, but we wanted to get the project in the right order before dropping any content. Daytime Swordfishing and Daytime Swordfishing Baits are now out and on sale!

With the change in the seasons comes the next phase of "In the Spread" and it is a busy one. RJ and Full Throttle Media producer Seth Horne are staging to hit the waters off Nova Scotia to shoot the bluefin tuna instructional. Shortly thereafter, work will begin filming five additional instructional videos. By January, we will seven videos finished and on sale for the "In the Spread" series. Stay tuned because we have involved some brilliant fishermen in this next phase. The project is looking incredible with big announcements on the horizon.

In The Spread would not have been possible without the generous help of Roddy Hays. Roddy is really the guy who helped FTM get this project rolling. Our first few films were filmed with Roddy in his shop and on his boat. Thanks Capt. Hays.
